Athenas Swim and Dive Picks Up Two SCIAC Wins at Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Meilan Uyeno swept the one-meter and three-meter dive, and eight different Athena swimmers won individual events as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team cruised to a pair of conference wins in a SCIAC tri-meet at Cal Lutheran.

The Athenas improve to 6-1 in the SCIAC with its wins over Cal Lutheran and La Verne, and 6-4 overall, with the other three defeats coming to Division I programs (UC San Diego, CSU Bakersfield, California Baptist). 

Uyeno picked up a narrow win in the three-meter (258.25 to 249.10) over Maddie Greig of Cal Lutheran, and added a win in the one-meter with 233.10 points, leading a 1-2-3 CMS finish as Anna Zeren was second and Makenna Bolton came in third.  

The Athenas made a quick statement by earning the top two finishing teams in the opening 200-yard medley relay. Annika Sharma, Mackenzie Mayfield, Sun Young Byun and Annette Chang finished first in 1:49.06, and Mary Grace Martin, Kelly Prawira, Madeleine Kan and Ally Rudolph earned second place in 1:51.86. 

Cal Lutheran took first place in the first three individual events, but CMS then asserted itself and won eight of the final nine. Mayfield started the run of dominance off by winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.49, leading another 1-2-3 finish with Prawira in second and Rudolph in third.

Byun followed with a win in the 200 fly by a margin of almost two seconds, finishing in 2:09.20, and Kan took the 50-yard freestyle in 24.90 to close out the first swimming session. 

After an intermission, Cal Lutheran earned first in the 100 free, before Anna Werts earned a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:11.61 for the Athenas. Prawira followed with a win in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:27.91, with Lexi Lee earning second and Revere Schmidt coming in third just .06 behind (2:32.22 to 2:32.28). 

Katy Shaw, who won both the 500 and the 1650 against California Baptist yesterday, earned her third distance win of the weekend by taking the 500 in 5:12.43. Sharma then picked up a close win in the 100 fly (58.87 to 59.08) and Allyson Yao led a 1-2-3 finish in the 400 IM in 4:39.52, with Revere Schmidt second and Allison Nguyen third.

CMS capped off the meet with a convincing win of over 6 seconds in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Sharma, Mayfield, Kan and Chang finishing in 3:35.97, well ahead of Cal Lutheran in 3:42.20. 

The Athenas will be back in action in two weeks when they host a Senior Day meet against Redlands on Jan. 27 at Axelrood Pool.
