Mitchum Sweeps Backstroke Events, but CMS Women's Swim and Dive Falls to Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Jameson Mitchum won both the 100 and the 200 back, and Makenna Parkinson completed a sweep of the diving events, but it wasn't enough as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team dropped a 200-152 decision to Pomona-Pitzer after the second day of the annual two-day meet between the cross-street rivals.

Katy Shaw added a win in the 1650 for the Athenas, and Ella Blake took first in the 200 free for CMS, which slips to 3-2 in dual meets this year, with the other defeat coming to Division I UC San Diego.

Saturday's action began with the 200-yard medley relay team moving into seventh in CMS history with a time of 1:44.07, with Mitchum swimming the lead backstroke leg, followed by Mackenzie Mayfield, Sun Young Byun, and Annika Sharma

Mitchum then took the first individual win of the day for the Athenas when she swam the 100 back in 56.75 seconds. Byun was second in 57.82, edging out Abigail Liao of Pomona-Pitzer by one-hundredth of a second. Mitchum came back to win the 200 back in 2:03.52, as the Athenas went 1-2-3, with Quinn Katayama-Stall second in 2:07.99 and Anna Werts third in 2:08.56.

Blake won the 200 free in 1:53.33, which was another 1-2 finish for CMS as Shaw came in second in 1:53.92. Mayfield finished second in the 100 breast, but moved into seventh in CMS history with a time of 1:04.39. Shaw won the 1650 in 17:36.99, a margin of just over 15 seconds ahead of Naomi Locala of Pomona-Pitzer.

Parkinson had a close win in the three-meter dive against teammate Izzy Doud, winning 259.40 to 254.30, adding it to her one-meter dive win from yesterday.

CMS will be back in action in a month after taking a break for finals and the holidays, resuming competition on Jan. 6 at the California Baptist Distance Meet, before returning home to face Whittier in a SCIAC meet on Jan. 7.
