Makenna Parkinson earned wins in both diving events in the SCIAC opener

CMS Women's Swim and Dive Opens SCIAC with 188-108 win over Occidental

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Mackenzie Mayfield won three individual swimming events and Makenna Parkinson won both diving events to lead the CMS women's swimming and diving team to a 188-108 win over Occidental in its first SCIAC meet of the 2022-23 season.

With the win, CMS stands at 1-1 on the young season, after dropping its first meet to UC San Diego two weeks ago.

CMS took first place in the first swimming event of the new SCIAC Season, with Jameson Mitchum, Mayfield, Sun Young Byun and Annika Sharma winning the 200 medley relay in 1:48.08, a margin of over three seconds. 

Occidental then won the first two individual swimming events, before Byun took first in the 100 back, edging teammate Quinn Katayama-Stall in a 1-2 Athena finish. Mayfield added a 50 free win in 24.86 seconds, and then came back after an intermission to win the 200 breast in 2:23.72 and the 200 IM in 2:10.17. 

Anna Werts added a win in the 200 back in 2:09.02, and Katy Shaw earned the victory in the 500 free in 5:14.84. 

The Athenas concluded the meet with a 1-2-3 finish in the 400 free relay after Occidental's top team was disqualified, with Byun, Shaw, Blake and Sharma finishing first in 3:36.41. 

Parkinson was first in the one-meter dive with a score of 269.05, just ahead of Emma Ng Pack with 261.40. The two finished 1-2 in the three-meter as well with Parkinson taking first with 272.50 and Ng Pack second with 261.65, while both also earned their first zone qualifying scores of the new season. 

CMS will be back in action on Saturday for its first home meet of the 2022-23 season when it hosts Chapman and Caltech. The diving events will begin at 10 a.m., followed by swimming at 12 noon.
