Former CMS Swimmer Mackenzie Leake '15 Wins US Masters Ultramarathon Competition

PORTLAND, Ore. - Former Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimmer Mackenzie Leake (Scripps '15) won the 11-mile Ultramarathon competition at the U.S. Masters Swimming Competition in Portland, Oregon on Sunday, the second year in a row that she has finished first in the event.

Leake completed the 2019 Ultramarathon Open Water race in just under four hours (3:59:18), winning by over 14 seconds. A year ago, she won the same race in 4:08:51, trimming over nine seconds off of her time this year to repeat as champion. 

This summer's title also marks the third year in a row that Leake has won an open water competition at the U.S. Masters. In 2017, she won the Sprint Distance Open Water National Championship (one mile) with a time of 21:55.

While competing for CMS, Leake had eight top 10-finishes over her three SCIAC Championships from 2013-15, including earning All-SCIAC honors in the 400 IM as a sophomore with a third-place finish. She also was top 10 in the 100 IM, the 200 fly, and the 1650 during her career. 

In addition to continuing her swimming career, Leake is currently pursuing her PhD in computer science at Stanford University in Palo Alto.
