CMS Women's Swimming and Diving Cruises Past Whittier to Remain Undefeated in SCIAC

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team won every swimming event on its way to a 231-43 win over Whittier on Saturday afternoon at Whittier, improving to 5-0 in the SCIAC this season.

After finishing 1-2-3 in the opening medley relay, senior Torrey Hart captured the 1000 meters with a time of 11:17.09. Senior Riley Hoffman followed with a win in the 200 in 1:59.77, the first of a 1-2-3 finish as she was followed by senior Emma Stacy and junior Janet Tran. 

Junior Liv Baker, who recently returned to the line-up after studying abroad in the fall, took first place in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.20, while freshman Rachel Wander followed with a win in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.97) and freshman Augusta Lewis took the 200-yard butterfly in 2:10.56. 

The closest race for the Athenas came in the 50 free, where junior Jocelyn Crawford won by just .18 over Brooke Geske (24.72 to 24.90). After an intermission, sophomore Natalia Orbach-Mandel, who was out of action in November and December with an injury, also took a close race from Geske in the 100 (53.73 to 54.21) to earn a first-place finish. 

The Athenas finished off their sweep of the specialty strokes, with Baker adding a 200-yard backstroke win to her 100 with a 2:10.17, freshman Ava Sealander taking first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:35.10, and freshman Natalie Larsen earning the win in the 100 fly (1:01.24).

Tran (pictured) took first place in the 500 free (5:24.43) and Sealander captured the final individual event of the day with a win in the 200 IM (2:16.25).

Tran, Hoffman, Stacy and sophomore Allie Umemoto capped off the swimming sweep with a win in the 400 free relay (3:41.05). Whittier's only win of the day came in the one-meter diving, where Becca Ayers edged out senior Jacque Desmond (288.00 - 283.90), but Desmond was able to earn a first-place finish in the three-meter with a 286.05. 

CMS will be back in action next weekend when it travels to Redlands for a 10:30 a.m. meet.
