Crawford named Newcomer of the Year as Athenas dominate All-SCIAC awards
LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced that freshman Jocelyn Crawford (CMC) was selected as the swimming and diving Newcomer of the Year and Head Coach Charlie Griffiths earned Coach of the Year honors on Feb. 24.
Crawford made an immediate impact for the Athenas as she claimed six SCIAC titles in her first appearance which were the most by an individual at the SCIAC Championship this year. The freshman set a CMS and SCIAC meet record while winning the 50-yard freestyle in 23.34. She won the 100-yard backstroke and placed second in the 100-yard freestyle. She also swam key legs in four championship relays, anchoring the NCAA-qualifying 200-yard medley relay in 22.98, leading off the 400 medley relay with a 100 back time .04 faster than her winning individual title as well as swimming quick legs on the victorious 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.
Griffiths and his staff guided the Athenas to a SCIAC dual meet record of 8-0 on the season and the 2017 SCIAC Championship taking the title by 296 points. It marked the 18th overall title for CMS as the Athenas had five swimmers qualify for NCAAs and five divers qualify for regionals.
