Athenas Set Records at Redlands

In the final dual meet of the season, the CMS Athena swimming and diving squad took down the host University of Redlands Bulldogs by a count of 166 to 74 on Saturday.  The Athenas finish 7-0 in SCIAC and the class of 2011 concludes its career with a perfect 28-0 record in league dual meets.

Sophomore Kelly Chang proved to be clutch on both diving boards. Chang won the 1-meter competition with a score of 181.20 and 3-meter diving with a 202.55.

CMS swimmers set three pool records and knocked on the door of two more, en route to the victory.  Freshman Helen Liu played a role in all three record-setting performances.  Each new record replaced a mark already held by CMS.

The 400 yard medley relay team of Tessa Dover, Emma Jones, Annika Jessen and Liu clocked in at 4:02.15, edging the time of 4:02.85 set two years ago by the Athenas.  In the 50 freestyle Liu knocked off the record by more than half a second with her 24.32 besting 2007 alum Lauren Kristensen's time of 24.83.  To cap off the meet, Jenni Rinker, Liu, Jones and Michele Kee posted a time of 3:36.69 in the 400 yard freestyle relay.  CMS held the previous record with a 3:39.32, set in 2007.

Michele Kee narrowly missed a pair of pool marks. In the 200 IM, Kee was .32 shy of the record.  Her 2:08.86 was an NCAA D-III "B" cut and ranks third on CMS' all time list. In the 100 free, Kee's 53.48 was a mere .07 off of Kristensen's 2007 standard.

Like Liu and Kee, senior Jenni Rinker was a triple winner.  In addition to her leg on the 400 free relay, Rinker won the 200 yard freestyle and 200 yard backstroke events. Rounding out the gold medals, fellow senior Carliann Brashier smoothly paced herself to victory in the 1650 yard freestyle. Sophomore Olivia Graham was the sole competitor under 2:30 in the 200 breast, touching in 2:29.76.

With the conclusion of dual meets, the Athenas turn their full attention to the SCIAC Championships.  SCIAC diving prelims will be contested Saturday and Sunday on the south side of Sixth Street at Pomona-Pitzer.  SCIAC swimming and diving finals will be February 20-22 at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.
