ORANGE, Calif. - Mary Markaryan finished with a game-high 18 points but it was not enough as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team fell short in a 74-61 road loss against Chapman on Saturday afternoon at Harold Hutton Sports Center.
With the defeat, CMS dropped to 1-6 on the season and 0-2 in SCIAC play, while Chapman improved to 3-2 and 1-1 in conference play with the win.
Layla Woods led Chapman with 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while Aidan Sherfey added 11 points for the Panthers.
Tanya Ghai and Katie Resendiz finished with 10 points apiece while Markaryan added a team-high six rebounds to lead the Athenas on the glass. Kayla Ishibashi had eight points, making two three-pointers and Ava Grey finished with seven points, also making two threes.
The Athenas led 21-20 in the second quarter after a Resendiz lay-up but the Panthers closed the period on a 17-10 run, and Chapman was able to extend their lead in the second half.
CMS will next host Whittier on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Roberts Pavilion.
