Carter Stays Hot as CMS Women's Basketball Takes Road Win at Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. - Jacey Carter knocked down five three-pointers as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team picked up its 10th SCIAC win of the season with a 67-58 road victory over Whittier on Saturday.

With the win, CMS now stands at 14-6 overall and 10-3 in SCIAC with three games left to play. The Athenas are one game behind Redlands in a battle for the No. 2 seed and a home semifinal game, with a game at Redlands looming on Feb. 15 to potentially be a fight for home-court advantage.

Carter came into the game with 15 threes in her last three games and kept up the pace with five more on nine attempts to finish with 19 points. After being held to 0-3 from beyond the arc on opening day against Willamette, she has now had at least one three in each of the 19 games since. Renee Chong added 14 points for CMS, while Ariana Dalia had 12 points and eight assists.

CMS never trailed, jumping out to a 20-11 lead after the first quarter. Chong's three-pointer made it a 10-2 lead with 4:58 left in the first, and Katie Resendiz and Carter closed out the quarter with layups.

Whittier scored at the halftime buzzer to keep it a 35-25 lead at the break and had it within seven late in the third, before Resendiz knocked down a three off a Carter feed just before the buzzer to make it 51-41 going into the fourth.

Sadie Heckman gave CMS its largest lead at 59-45, and Whittier had one last run to get to within 59-53, but Carter hit a clutch three with 1:27 left to help end the comeback hopes.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Chapman for a 7 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion, its final regular season home game.
