Renee Chong Adds SCIAC Offensive Player of Week Accolades for CMS Women's Basketball

CLAREMONT, Calif. - After earning a spot on the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week earlier on Tuesday, Renee Chong of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team added SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors to her weekly awards haul, the league office announced this afternoon.

Chong becomes the first Offensive Player of the Week for the Athenas this season, after Ariana Dalia and Mary Markaryan each earned Defensive Player of the Week honors in December.

In a 79-77 win over Illinois Wesleyan on Friday, Chong had a key role in leading the Athenas to comebacks in regulation and in overtime. She had seven points in the fourth quarter, and nine in overtime, on her way to a career-high 27. Her two foul shots in the final minute of regulation helped CMS come back from five down to force overtime, and then she had nine of the CMS 11 points in the extra session.

Chong had her first overtime bucket on a crossover and driving layup to pull CMS within 72-71. After Illinois Wesleyan answered, Chong nailed a three-pointer on a stepback to tie it at 74-74, and then put the Athenas ahead to stay with a three-pointer from the left wing. The 27 points was the highest total for an Athena player since Kate Parrish had 27 against Nebraska Wesleyan on Nov. 29. 2019.

CMS will be back in action when it battles for first place in the SCIAC on Wednesday evening against La Verne at 7 p.m. at Roberts Pavilion. La Verne (4-0) and CMS (3-0) are the last two unbeaten teams left in conference play.
