Renee Chong Captures National Team of the Week Accolades from D3hoops

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Renee Chong of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team earned a spot on the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week for games through Sunday, Jan. 1, the website announced this morning.

Chong earned the honor after a spectacular performance in a 79-77 overtime win over Illinois Wesleyan on Friday. She finished with 27 points, surpassing her previous personal high of 18, and had nine of the 11 CMS points in overtime as it came away with a two-point win.

Chong started her overtime run with a driving lay-up with the Athenas down by three. After Illinois Wesleyan answered that basket to go ahead 74-71, Chong hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to flip the scoreboard and put CMS ahead 77-74 with 1:20 to go. She tied the score when she set up her own three-pointer with a stepback at the top of the key, and then swished another one from the left wing after coming open off a screen and getting a pass from Ariana Dalia

The win was the sixth in a row for CMS, which now stands at 7-3 overall. The Athenas will next be in action in a battle for first place in the SCIAC at home against La Verne on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. La Verne comes in at 4-0 in league, with the Athenas at 3-0, the only two undefeated teams left in SCIAC play.
