CMS Women's Basketball Cruises to 95-38 Opening Day Win

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Austyn Masuno had a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team knocked down 12 three-pointers as a team as it captured a 95-38 win over SAGU American Indian College on Friday evening at Roberts Pavilion.

Jacey Carter (13 points) and Ava Grey (12 points) each knocked down three three-pointers, while Nicole Hayase (nine points, 2-3 3FG), Kayla Ishibashi (eight points, 2-2 3FG), and Grace Florendo (eight points, 2-3 3FG) each had two, as the five guards combined to make 12 shots from behind the arc on the evening.

All 14 players who dressed for CMS scored on the day, and 12 of the 14 had at least one assist. The Athenas led 24-10 after the first quarter, and after AIC scored the first basket of the second quarter, CMS went on a 20-0 run to break it open.

Ishibashi started the 20-0 run with a three, and Hayase and Florendo hit consecutive threes to push the lead to 40-12. Masuno hit two foul shots, and Florendo hit a running jumper from the foul line to cap the 20-0 spurt.

CMS also had a big day defensively in its opener, holding AIC to just 16-54 shooting on the day (29.6 percent) and forcing 36 turnovers. Elizabeth Howell-Egan had five steals for the Athenas, while Masuno and Grey each had three. Eliza Friend had two blocked shots in her CMS debut, while also pulling down eight rebounds, helping CMS to a 57-35 advantage in that category.

The Athenas will be back in action on Sunday when they host Pacific (Ore.) in their first Division III game of the year. CMS will then play in two tournaments, traveling to NYU on Nov. 20-21 to play the host Violets and Bridgewater State, and then returning home for the annual David Wells Classic on Nov. 26-27
