Ten Athenas Score in Road Victory Over Regals

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team built a 31-18 lead at halftime before cruising to a 69-52 victory over the Cal Lutheran Regals on Saturday evening. Kate Parrish (CMC) scored 14 points off the bench to lead 10 different scorers for the Athenas in the victory.

CMS forced 19 turnovers and held the Regals to a 34.0% mark from the field in the game.

Maya Love filled up the box score with 10 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in the 17-point victory.

The Athenas steadily built their lead over the course of the opening quarter. CMS took a 7-2 lead after an and-one layup from Love and a bucket from Parrish just over three minutes into the contest. After the Regals closed the game to 13-9, Lindsey Cleary (CMC) beat the first-quarter buzzer with a layup to give CMS a six-point lead at 15-9.

A 6-1 run from the Regals started the second quarter and pulled Cal Lutheran within one at 16-15. The Athenas responded and scored the next nine points to build their lead to double-digits at 25-15 with 4:37 remaining in the half. A three from the Regals made it a seven-point game, but CMS ended the half with buckets from Love, Parrish, and Maezelle Millan (CMC) to take a 31-18 lead into the break.

Right after the half, the CMS lead dipped down to six points at 31-25, but a 13-4 CMS run built the advantage back to double-digits at 44-29. The run lasted 4:44 and Parrish led the charge with eight points during the streak. Love added a bucket and Lauren Longo (SC) connected from downtown.

The Regals made another run to get back into the game early in the fourth quarter when they cut the lead to 48-39 following a three from Taylor Oshiro. The triple was one of nine threes that the Regals made in the game (9-24 - 37.5%).

Just as they did in the third quarter, the Athenas responded. CMS rattled off 11 of the next 14 points to take a 59-42 lead with less than five minutes remaining to put the game out of reach. Corinne Bogle (CMC) fueled the 2:18 run with six points, including a three to cap off the streak.

After the run, the Regals were unable to get any closer than 12 points down the stretch and the Athenas claimed the 69-52 victory.

The Athenas dominated the paint on Saturday scoring 38 points in the key compared to just 16 points from the Regals in the paint. CMS was also aided by 21 second-chance points on 15 offensive rebounds. Cal Lutheran recorded just five second-chance points.

CMS improves to 16-3 on the season and 9-1 in the SCIAC. Saturday's game marks the final road game for the Athenas during the regular season. CMS will host their last six contests in the friendly confines of Roberts Pavilion. The lengthy stretch of home games will begin with La Verne on Jan. 31 when the Leopards come to town at 7:00 p.m.
