Regals give Athenas second SCIAC loss
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – For just the second time in SCIAC play this season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team ended up with the lower score, losing to Cal Lutheran 68-59. The Athenas (10-7, 6-2) were out-matched by the Regals (10-6, 6-1) in a battle for the leader of the conference.
The game was close for the majority of the first quarter until Cal Lu made a few stops on defense and four different Regals made 3-point baskets to take the 20-14 lead after the first ten minutes. During that time, senior Kris Brackmann (CMC) led CMS with eight points from three baskets while the team only committed one turnover in the quarter.
CMS bounced back a bit in the second quarter as senior Aly Young (CMC) got to work. The center was repeatedly fouled while driving to the hoop and converted on all four free throws in the period. Junior Corinne Bogle (CMC) also drained both of her foul shot attempts but the team still trailed 36-28 going into halftime.
The team rallied in the second half to score just one less point than the Regals during the final 20 minutes, but the deficit from the first half was too much to overcome.
By herself, Young was 4-for-7 in the third quarter and was responsible for nine of the team's 17 points. Young tacked on another six in the fourth for her eventual career-high of 21 points.
Bogle led CMS with three assists in the game while Brackman's three steals were a team high as well.
Four Regals scored in double-digits during the game, led by Haley Hodgson and Jessica Salottolo at 15 and 13 points respectively.
After the three games last week, CMS returns to its Wednesday-Saturday rhythm this week, facing La Verne (2-14, 2-5) at home on Jan. 25 and then Pomona-Pitzer (0-15, 0-7) on the road on Jan. 28.
