Pioneers edge out Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team played its first game in two and a half weeks and fell to the Lewis & Clark Pioneers 68-63.

The Pioneers came out strong and held a 14-6 lead early, but a trio of Kailee Severt (CMC) three pointers kept the score close in the first quarter.

CMS had its best quarter of play in the second, as junior guard Jai Dungca's (CMC) first points of the game sparked a 13 point run. Severt contributed two more threes bringing her first half scoring total to 21. Junior forward Kris Brackmann (CMC) converted on a pair of free throws late and the Athenas took a 38-34 lead into the half.

The tide began to turn against CMS in the third quarter when Lewis & Clark took advantage of the Athenas' foul trouble. The Pioneers were almost perfect on eight free throw attempts and had a six point advantage going into the final frame.

The Athenas could not retake the lead in an even fourth despite a strong effort to close the gap late. The Pioneers held strong defensively and came away with their first win of the season.

Now 5-4 on the year, CMS will be right back on the court in the second of a home back-to-back Dec. 30 against Smith College at the Linde Activities Center.
