
Athenas Sweep Holiday Classic
The Athenas basketball team went 2-0 at the Caltech-CMS Holiday Classic to finish their first semester schedule 7-2 overall. On December 19, CMS came back from a 13-point second half deficit to defeat Buena Vista University 82-78. On December 20, CMS defeated Knox College 75-58. Aria Krumwiede (SO, Scottsdale, AZ [pictured middle]) was named MVP of the tournament after scoring 46 points and adding six assists and four rebounds. She hit eight of 12 three-pointers in the two games. Taylon Johnson (SO, Prairie Village, KS [pictured right]) and Cameron Hanson (SR, Rockville, MD [pictured left]) also earned All-Tournament honors. Johnson scored 29 points and added six rebounds and two assists while hitting seven three-pointers. Hanson scored 23 points and added 18 rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocks.
Krumwiede, Johnson and Hanson have led the Athenas to their best start in four seasons. Krumwiede leads the team in scoring (16.1/g), assists (4.3/g) and steals (12) while hitting 46.7% on three-pointers. Hanson scores 10.2 points/game and leads the team in rebounding (7.7/g) and steals (12) while shooting 62.5% from the field. Johnson adds a third double-digit scorer with 10.3 points/game. Jen Osgood (SR, Vashon, WA) leads the team in blocks (8). A strong bench has also helped in the strong start with 11 players playing regularly led by Sarah Beattie's (JR, Quechee, VT) 7.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
CMS has two non-conference games remaining prior to the start of SCIAC play on January 7. On December 31, CMS will host the California Martime Academy at 1:00 and on January 3, CMS will host Southwestern College (AZ) at 5:00.
