Sprints highlight Ross and Sharon Irwin Invite for CMS

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Despite not sending any distance runners to the event, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track & field team finished in first (283 points) and the men's track & field team finished in fourth (157 points) at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Invitational hosted by Point Loma University of March 19.

Sophomore Tyra Abraham (SCR) stole the show for the Athenas in the 100 and 200 meters as she ran the fastest times in all of NCAA Division III this season in those events. She finished first in the100 meters at the event and her 100 time of 12 seconds flat was just off her PR which is a CMS record (11.93). Then she finished second in her heat of the 200 meters (first for D-III athletes) with a PR of 25.22 which ranks fourth all-time at CMS.

On the men's side in the 200 meters, freshman Corbin Bethurem (CMC) won his heat and had the third-fastest time (22.00) of the meet. His time ranks eighth in Division III and he just snuck into the CMS top-10 list with the 10th fastest 200, all-time for the Stags.

The 4x100 meter relay team of freshman Brittany Griffin (CMC), sophomore Aiyanna Cameron-Lewis (CMC), freshman Sabrine Griffith (CMC) and Abraham ran a CMS program top-10 time (48.23 – 6th) and finished second in their heat in the event behind Concordia.

A little later in the meet, Griffith placed fourth in her 100-meter hurdles heat (15.35), just off her PR by four-one hundredths of a second.

Of four-year college competitors in the 400 meters, Cameron-Lewis had the fastest time (56.98) as she blew passed the competition and won by nearly three seconds for the third-fastest time in Division III this season.

For the Stags, Kofi Sekyi-Appiah (HMC) nearly won his 100 meters heat, but finished third by less than a tenth of a second with a time of 11.09.

In field events, junior Cam Van (CMC) won the long jump (6.51m). He also finished second in the high jump and the triple jump.

The Athenas took the top-4 spots in the discus throw, led by junior Vaiva Palunas (SCR) and her top marks were 42.43 meters. Junior Lauren Mott (CMC) had marks that made the CMS top-10 at sixth (41.94m). Then in the hammer throw, the Athenas took the top two positions. Sophomore Emily Bassett (CMC) had the best marks in the event (45.11m). Palunas in the shot put had the fifth-highest mark in Division III (12.39m). Freshman Jacquelyn Desmond (SCR) just missed a CMS top-10 mark in the women's pole vault (3.19m). Stag sophomore pole vaulter Michael Wagenveld (CMC) finished in second place in his event.

CMS now has two weeks off before its next competition, the second SCIAC multi-dual meet of the season, on April 2 at Redlands.
