CMS Softball Falls in SCIAC Opening Round Game, Meets Cal Lutheran Saturday Morning

REDLANDS, Calif. - The Chapman softball team used a five-run second inning to break it open and take a 9-0 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the first round of the double-elimination SCIAC Postseason Tournament on Friday at the Redlands Field of Dreams.

With the loss, CMS will face Cal Lutheran at 11 a.m. on Saturday in an elimination game, after Cal Lutheran fell to host Redlands 5-2. The winner will move on to play again at 4 p.m., against whoever loses the 1:30 p.m. winner's bracket game between Chapman and Redlands. The final will then be Sunday at 12 noon, with a second game to follow if necessary. 

Six different players had hits for CMS, with Sophia Nguyen going 1-for-1 off the bench. Destiny Garcia led off the game with a single, and Giselle Lai, Emma Suh, Rachel Sapirstein and Jacqueline Solomon added hits as well. Delaney Pratt threw one inning of shutout relief. 

Morgan Lastinger was 2-for-3 with four RBI for Chapman, and Grace Fosselman was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Rose Malen went the distance to get the shutout win. 

CMS took two out of three from Cal Lutheran, winning the first game of the series 3-2 in nine innings after Lai tied it in the seventh with an RBI single and Sapirstein won it in the ninth with an RBI single. CMS won the first game of the Saturday doubleheader. before the Regals won the final game of the series 8-1.
