CMS Softball Takes Extra-Inning Win over La Verne, Second Game Suspended

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team trailed 2-1 in the seventh, and 3-2 in the eighth, but bounced back to tie it both times before winning it in the bottom of the tenth on an RBI fielder's choice from Delaney Pratt on Sunday at Athena Field.

The second game of the doubleheader was suspended in the bottom of the first inning and will be resumed at a later date, with the score 0-0 and the Athenas at bat with two outs and nobody on base.

The win was the fifth in a row for CMS and improves its record to 9-4 on the season and 2-0 in the SCIAC, while La Verne falls to 6-13 overall and 1-4 in the league.

CMS was down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, with Giselle Lai hit a sinking liner to center field with one out. The ball fell in, and then rolled to the wall after it eluded the diving catch attempt from the Leopards. Sarah Loper then drew a walk, and Maya Loper put down a perfect squeeze bunt to tie the score 2-2.

La Verne hit two straight doubles in the eighth to take the lead back 3-2, but with the Athenas down to their final out, Kaili Aqui went the other way to hit a double down the left field line to knot the score up 3-3, with the ball once again eluding the diving catch attempt from the Leopards.

After both teams were retired in the ninth, the game went to the international tiebreaker rule, with a runner starting on second base to begin the inning. La Verne was unable to get the runner home, and CMS started the bottom half with a single from Rachel Sapirstein to put runners on first and third with nobody out. One out later, Pratt pinch hit, and hit a grounder to second base towards the 3-4 hole that easily scored the winning run.

Madison Gonzalez had two hits to lead the way for the Athenas (2-for-5), while Emma Suh added an RBI single with two outs in the second to cut a La Verne lead to 2-1. Jade Johnson threw seven innings in relief to get the win, allowing five hits and one run.

CMS will be back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Oberlin for a non-conference doubleheader.
