CMS Softball Earns Sweep over Saint Katherine

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Maya Loper pitched five innings of four-hit ball in a 5-2 win in the opener, and Maya Weigel-Murphy threw four shutout innings in a 4-0 win in the nightcap as the CMS softball team earned a sweep over Saint Katherine on Saturday at Athena Field.

With the wins, CMS improved to 2-3 on the season while Saint Katherine dropped to 2-7 on the year. 

In the opener, Loper threw six strikeouts to pick up her first win this season, while also adding a single to left in the second inning. Madison Gonzalez finished 2-for-3 while Destiny Garcia, Rachel Sapirstein, Sarah Loper and Delaney Pratt each added an RBI as the Athenas scored all five runs in the second. 

Sapirstein and Pratt had RBI singles to right, leading to Gonzalez, Sapirstein and Sarah Loper runs. Garcia singled up the middle bringing home Paige Zimmerman for a 4-0 lead and Sarah Loper grounded out to first base, allowing Sophia Nguyen to come home for an 5-0 advantage. The Firebirds added single runs in the fifth and sixth but were unable to score after that.

In the nightcap, Weigel-Murphy picked up the win for CMS, finishing with three strikeouts in four scoreless innings of two-hit ball. Hannah Adams added one strikeout in two innings of play. Jacqueline Solomon walked in an RBI in the first and Giselle Lai had an RBI single in the second to give CMS a 2-0 lead. Zimmerman recorded an RBI single to third base in the fifth and Kaili Aqui added an RBI single up the middle to cap the 4-0 win for the Athenas. 

CMS will be back in action on Monday when it hosts York (Pa.) for a single game at 3 p.m.
