CMS Softball Earns Walk-Off Win in Opener as Athenas Split with Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Madison Gonzalez and Ari Livi had back-to-back bunt singles in the bottom of the seventh inning to plate two runs and give the CMS Softball team a 3-2 win over Redlands in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Athenas Field. Redlands came back to take the nightcap 4-1 to earn the split.

With the split, CMS moves to 24-11 and 12-6 in SCIAC play, staying even with Redlands, which also moves to 12-6 in league play.

Redlands went ahead 2-1 in the top of the seventh inning, but Rachel Sapirstein, who played the first run of the game in the fourth with a two-out RBI double started the rally in the bottom of the seventh. She fell behind 0-2, and then fouled off several pitches in a long at-bat before being hit with a 2-2 pitch. Paige Zimmerman also fouled several two-strike pitches off, before singling to center field to move pinch-runner Kristin LeBlanc to second.

Gonzalez then bunted to move the runners over, and her bunt was placed in an ideal spot between the pitching circle and first base, and she was able to beat it out for a single. Everyone moved up a base when the throw got away, ting the score 2-2 and putting runners on second and third with nobody out. Livi then had a perfect squeeze in front of home plate, and Zimmerman was easily able to slide in with the winning run.

Hannah Adams went the distance in the circle for CMS to get the win, allowing just five hits.

In the nightcap, CMS tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning when pinch-runner Megan Kho stole third and came home on an errant throw. Redlands, though, was able to score once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to take a 4-1 win as Katyln Gandara threw a four-hitter to get her second win of the weekend, with Madison Gonzalez (2-for-3) having the best day at the plate for the Athenas.

CMS will close out the regular season with a home game against Pomona-Pitzer on Friday, followed by a road doubleheader at the Sagehens on Saturday.
