CMS Softball Uses Dominant Pitching to Sweep Oxy, Move to 5-0 in SCIAC

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team had six pitchers combine to allow only five hits in the entire doubleheader as it took 7-1 and 6-0 wins over Occidental on Saturday at Athena Field.

With the wins, CMS improves to 17-5 overall and 5-0 in the SCIAC, while Occidental slips to 5-15 and 0-5 in league play. 

Maya Loper started the opener and allowed no hits, while Jade Johnson threw the fifth and sixth and Delaney Pratt threw the seventh, combining on a one-hitter. Abby Thompson had five RBI offensively, with a two-run homer, a two-run double and a sacrifice fly. 

In the nightcap, Hannah Adams went four innings and allowed to hits to get the win, while Paige Zimmerman threw the fifth and sixth and Alexis Gero the seventh, combining on a shutout. Jacqueline Solomon was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Destiny Garcia was 3-for-4 with two RBI offensively. 

Thompson set the tone in the opener with a two-run homer in the first, and then added a sacrifice fly in the second after a Garcia RBI single. Kaili Aqui added an RBI single in the fifth, which was followed by a two-run double from Thompson. 

Garcia singled in the second, and then came all the way around to score when a bad throw got into the outfield as three runs scored to make it 4-0. Solomon added an RBI double in the third, and Garcia singled home Aqui in the fourth to close out the scoring. 

The two teams will finish the three-game series tomorrow with a single game at Occidental at 12 noon.
