Second Time Through, CMS Softball Pulls Away from Cal Lutheran for 8-0 Win

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team was retired in order in the first three innings, but then scored three in the fourth, four in the fifth and walked it off with a single run in the sixth for an 8-0 win over Cal Lutheran in the SCIAC opener for both teams.

Heather Shipley (5-2) threw a three-hit shutout to get the win for CMS, which improves to 11-3 overall. Cal Lutheran slips to 7-7 on the year with the loss.

Emma Suh started things for CMS in the bottom of the fourth, leading off with an infield single. After Destiny Garcia walked, Abby Thompson hit an RBI single up the middle to score Suh with the first run.

Pinch-runner Sophia Nguyen stole second, and Rachel Sapirstein followed with a two-run single to make it a 3-0 game.

In the fifth, Suh plated a run on a fielder's choice, then got caught in a first-and-third play that allowed Kaili Aqui to steal home. Garcia followed with an RBI triple, and Thompson had her second RBI single of the day to make it 7-0.

CMS walked it off in the sixth with the bases loaded, as Delaney Pratt hit a grounder in the 5-6 hole that resulted in an error, but got the RBI as Ari Livi was on her way home with the run that forced the 8-run rule.

Shipley struck out one and walked none to get the shutout. The two teams will be back in action tomorrow at Cal Lutheran for a doubleheader to complete the three-game series.
