Koneti, Johnson Capture SCIAC Softball Weekly Awards for Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Ananya Koneti and sophomore Jade Johnson earned SCIAC Hitter of the Week and the SCIAC Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively, for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team, the league office announced today.

In the only action of the week for the Athenas on Friday against Vanbuard, Koneti returned to the batting order after only pinch-hitting on opening day against Azusa Pacific on Jan. 29, and she had an immediate impact, reaching base on four of her six plate appearances. She was 1-for-1 with two walks in the opening game, with her one hit a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth that got CMS back within just 4-3, which is where it stood when the game ended with her in the on-deck circle. She also added a 1-for-3 effort in the nightcap to bat .500 on the week with a .667 hitting percentage.

Johnson made her official CMS debut in the opening game (she pitched an inning last week against Asuza Pacific in a game that was called due to darkness before it became official) and had a strong effort out of the bullpen, pitching 2.2 inning of shutout relief. She came on in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on base that she left stranded, and then shut Vanguard out in the sixth and seventh to give CMS a chance at a comeback. In the seventh, a Vanguard runner got to third with one out, but Johnson was able to buckle down to get the final two outs and leave the runner stranded, but the Athenas ended the game in the bottom half with the tying run on base.

CMS has now had two different players win both SCIAC awards over the first two weeks. Destiny Garcia was the SCIAC Hitter of the Week last week, while Heather Shipley captured the Pitcher of the Week honor.

CMS will be back in action in 12 days, when it hosts Pacific Lutheran for a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Athena Field in its first action of the year against a Division III opponent.
