Kawai Scanlan Captures SCIAC Softball Hitter of the Week Accolades
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior center fielder Kawai Scanlan earned the SCIAC Softball Hitter of the Week honor for games through Sunday, March 2, the league office announced today.
Scanlan earned Hitter of the Week distinction after helping CMS to a 2-1 series win over Whittier in a rematch of last year's SCIAC Championship game, won by the Poets. Scanlan was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI in the opening game of the series, which the Athenas won 11-3 at Whittier.
In the opening game of the doubleheader at Athena Field on Saturday, Scanlan had arguably the biggest hit of the weekend, breaking a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI triple to right center. One out later, she came home with an insurance run as CMS captured the 4-2 win.
Scanlan added a 1-for-2 performance with a walk in the final game of the series, capping off a weekend in which she hit .444 with two triples, a double and three RBI, improving CMS to 4-2 in the SCIAC.
CMS will be back in action this weekend when it travels to the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Tucson, Arizona, playing six games in three days from Friday-Sunday. The schedule will include Christopher Newport and Emory & Henry on Friday, Babson and Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, and WashU and Central (Iowa) on Sunday.
