Troutman goes deep twice in SCIAC Tournament win

LA VERNE, Calif. – Sophomore Ande Troutman (CMC) sent two hits deep over the outfield fence to help the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team beat Whittier College 6-2 in the first round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament. With the win today, the Athenas advance to play the host, La Verne, at 12 p.m. on Saturday with the winner advancing to the championship.

The Poets started off hot in the first inning and strung together three hits to load the bases. Natalia Sanchez ripped a ball down the left field line to score Sierra Rodriguez and then Kaitlyn Garza drove in one more run before junior Anna Gurr (CMC) forced a pop up to second base to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the frame, CMS started to rally with two outs. Freshman Marissa Valdovinos (SC) put pressure on the defense and reached on an error and then sophomore Chloe Amarilla (CMC) and junior Carly Roleder (CMC) singled. Junior Briana Halle (CMC) singled and as the Poet shortstop fumbled with the ball up the middle, two runs came across for the Athenas, tying the score.

Senior Alexa Heydenberk (CMC) got things going in the bottom of the second but then was quickly doubled off after a popped up bunt. Sophomore Reeve Grobecker (CMC) got the second hit of the inning and then Troutman hammered a two-run homer over the right center fence.

Gurr went to work and scattered just two hits in three innings as her defense played flawlessly behind her.

Once again, Grobecker got on with a single and Troutman launched one deep, this time going the other way to left center. With the 6-2 lead, the Athenas never looked back. "I stayed calm and just found a pitch I could drive," said Troutman after the first two homeruns of the season.

The defense locked it down for two more innings to give CMS their first tournament win. Earlier today, the No. 1 seed Leos beat No. 4 seed Chapman 5-0. Chapman will face Whittier at 9:30 a.m. and then CMS and La Verne will go to battle at approximately 12 p.m.
