Lopsided split for Softball at Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team split with Whittier College in a Jekyll and Hyde double header at Whittier's Palmer Field on Saturday afternoon. The Athenas (19-15, 17-7) took game one in decisive fashion, 8-0, but then the Poets (17-19, 13-11) came roaring back in the nightcap to return the shutout, 8-0.

The Athenas amassed 13 hits in the game and scored in spurts. Sophomore Abigail Metsch (SC) and senior Alexa Heydenberk (CMC) got on in the first with a hit and a hit by pitch. CMS then loaded the bases with a bunt single from sophomore Reeve Grobecker (CMC). Sophomore Ande Troutman (CMC) came up with the big two-out double to clear the bases and give the Athenas the 3-0 lead.

Junior Anna Gurr (CMC) had another strong outing and lowered her ERA even further. She now sits at a 0.53 earned run average in conference play. Gurr only allowed three hits in the game and did not give up a walk.

CMS added another in the fifth, starting with sophomore Chloe Amarilla (CMC) doubling down the left field line in to the corner. Juniors Carly Roleder (CMC) and Briana Halle (CMC) followed that up with a pair of singles to drive in Amarilla.

With three doubles and two singles, the Athenas tacked on four more to take the eight-run lead in the sixth. Junior Chloe Rodman (CMC), Roleder and Halle all hit doubles off Whittier's starter, Sam Blum. After a pitching change, Metsch drove in freshman Hayley Giffin (CMC), Halle's pinch runner, from second base for the eighth run.

In the bottom of the frame, Whittier threatened to spoil Gurr's shutout, but the Athenas' ace caused a ground out to Roleder at third to end the game, stranding Briana Alvarez on third.

In the second game of the day, CMS handed Annika Seedborg her seventh win of the season. Seedborg limited the Athenas to just two hits while Whittier amassed eight hits and six walks of a trio of CMS pitchers.

Kacey Whitney led the Poets with a double and a homerun while Hayley Wishner added two doubles.

The Athenas return to the dirt on Friday, April 28 for the final home games of the season. CMS will face Cal Lutheran (15-17, 12-12) in a double header starting at 2 p.m. after honoring Heydenberk for Senior Day.
