Gurr throws shutout in split at Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team played two drastically different games on Friday afternoon at the University of Redlands for the SCIAC split. CMS (8-12, 6-4) won the first game 5-0 behind junior pitcher Anna Gurr (CMC) and then dropped the nightcap 6-1.

Both teams went three-up, three-down in the first inning and then the Athenas were the first to get on base in the top of the second. Junior Briana Halle (CMC) singled up the middle for CMS' first hit of the day and then was pinch ran for by freshman Hayley Giffin (CMC). Giffin stole second and then was hit in by a big double to right center by sophomore Abigail Metsch (SC).

Gurr went to work in the circle and was supported by a flawless CMS defense behind her. She ended up with four strikeouts and just one walk in the game.

The Athenas put up some more runs in the fifth, thanks to a timely hit by sophomore Ande Troutman (CMC). Metsch singled to lead off the inning and then sophomore Reeve Grobecker (CMC) got on from a Bulldog error, and advanced pinch runner sophomore Casey Nunnelly (SC) into scoring position. Sophomore Chloe Amarilla (CMC) reached on a fielder's choice and then Troutman cleared the bases with a double to the left center wall.

Junior Carly Roleder (CMC) tacked on one more run for CMS in the top of the seventh with a single to score Amarilla. The Bulldogs were unable to claw their way out of the hole and conceded the 5-0 victory to Gurr and the Athenas.

Game 1 Box Score

The second game of the double header was as different as it could be. CMS managed just one hit in the contest and scored off a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Amarilla and Halle limited Redlands to five hits in the game, but CMS defensive errors gave UR the upper hand.

The hitting pitcher for Redlands, Mika Imoto, was the only one in the lineup to tally more than one hit in the second game. Additionally, she recorded her second win of the season.
