CLAREMONT, Calif. – Coming off a successful weekend at the NFCA Leadoff Classic, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team continued on their roll with a sweep of Hamline, both games 8-0 in five innings. Sophomores Anna Gurr (CMC) earned her tenth win on the season and Carly Roleder (CMC) smacked her second career grand slam.
The Athenas scored in six of the eight offensive half innings on the day. Robinson finished with five hits, bumping her season average over .400. Senior Shannon O'Neill (CMC) and Roleder are also now above .400 at .415 and .403 respectively. As a team, CMS only struck out once in 36 at bats, the lowest in any double header in the season.
In game one, Roleder was 3-for-3, knocking in four runs with the grand slam and then scored once more, driven in by freshman Abigail Metsch (SCR) on a deep sacrifice fly. CMS earned the eighth run of the first game as senior Katie Savard (CMC) charged home when the Hamline catcher attempted to get a stealing runner at second base.
The Athenas in game two looked as sharp as in game one. Robinson earned two RBI on a single up the middle to score speedsters O'Neill and Janelle Shiozaki (CMC). Then in the bottom of the fourth, CMS loaded up the bases and forced a pitching change, but not before four runs crossed the plate.
The Athenas' pitching staff quietly went about their business, and in the process, lowered the team's ERA below 2.0 on the season. In ten innings, they allowed no runs, scattered six hits and walked three batters. Starters Gurr and Molly Rubidoux (CMC) earned the wins and sophomore Briana Halle (CMC) pitched the fifth inning of each game to close out the games and secure the victories.
No. 17 CMS improves to 16-5-1 (9-1 SCIAC) on the season and returns to SCIAC play tomorrow at Whittier (8-8, 1-5 SCIAC). Game times at 12 and 2 p.m.
