Triples lead to Athenas taking two from Occidental

CLAREMONT, Calif. –The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team beat Occidental College 9-0 and 15-0 (both in 5 innings) in its first SCIAC games since a successful spring break trip to Tucson. Three different Athenas tripled during the double header while the entire pitching staff contributed to two shutout victories.

The first game got off to slow start with both teams scoreless through two innings. Senior Megan Latta ignited the Athenas with a leadoff single in the bottom of the third followed by freshman Alexa Heydenberk yanking a triple to the right center gap. CMS kept the inning rolling with another triple, this time by sophomore Katie Savard, and a double down the left field line by senior Morgan Beltz.

The Athenas scored five in the third and tacked on another four runs in the bottom of the fourth off three singles by sophomores Tara Robinson, Brooklyn Robinson and Beltz and a double by sophomore Carlene Roberts.

Freshman Andrea Jewett came into the circle for junior starter Hayley Schultz and finished off the last three batters of the game to hold the Tigers scoreless.

CMS started right where they left off at the beginning of the second game. The Athenas scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. Tara Robinson and Heydenberk each had two RBI while Brooklyn Robinson hit her first triple on the season. The Tigers struggled to contain the Athenas by shuffling through a few pitchers, but CMS would not let up.

In the third and fourth inning the Athenas scored four and three runs respectively to up their lead to 15-0.

In the second game, Savard was a homer shy of hitting for the cycle and Tara Robinson had a personal season high of four RBI. Freshman Kaylilani Minami and her defense allowed only two hits in four innings of work. Sophomore Molly Rubidoux pitched the fifth inning for the Athenas and did not allow a runner on base.
