Offense Breaks Out, Athenas Top Redlands 13-2 For SCIAC Tournament Title

REDLANDS, Calif. - An early 2-0 deficit didn't faze the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team as they quickly came back and then ran away with a 13-2 win over Redlands on Saturday in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament final. Similar to last season, the Athenas entered the postseason tournament as the SCIAC's No. 2 seed and then went 3-0 to earn the tournament title. CMS is now 32-11 on the season and now has over a week to wait before the NCAA announces its field on Monday, May 6.
Redlands (34-10) got to CMS sophomore starting pitcher Hayley Schultz for a pair of runs – both unearned – in the top of the first inning. Redlands' inning was extended on an error and then Linda Park brought home the team's only runs with a single down the left field line.
In the bottom of the second, CMS put five runs on the board on five hits. Senior infielder Harmony Palmer and freshman infielder Katie Savard had back-to-back RBI hits to even the score at 2-2 against Redlands' Kayla Uphold. The Redlands' starter then hit sophomore Marie Bradvica with the bases loaded to give CMS a 3-2 lead. Bradvica went 2-for-3 in the game with a game-high five RBI. Freshman infielder Mikayla O'Neal added a two-run single in the inning to push the CMS lead to 5-2. All five of the runs in the inning were scored with two outs.
With a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning, CMS put up six runs in the inning as Bradvica and O'Neal each had two-run doubles. Freshman outfielder Tara Robinson and Palmer also added RBI hits in the inning as CMS chased Uphold from the game after 2 1/3 innings.
CMS added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by Bradvica. Freshman outfielder Janelle Shiozaki had a team-high three hits while, Robinson, Palmer, Savard, Bradvica and O'Neal each had two hits. Amanda Clark and and Grace Rose led Redlands with two hits apiece.
Schultz (25-3) got the win – her third in two days - for the Athenas as she threw five innings and allowed six hits and two runs.
