Both CMS And Redlands Get Shutout Wins In Top-20 Matchup On Senior Day

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 17 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team played their final regular season home games Friday, April 19, against No. 8 Redlands on Athena Field. It was the Athenas' senior day as the team honored infielder Harmony Palmer of Oceanside, Calif. and outfielder Kendall Kritzik of Gilbert, Ariz. CMS began the day needing to win both games of the doubleheader to have a shot at a regular season SCIAC Championship. The Athenas took care of business in game one winning 5-0, but the Bulldogs won game two, 9-0 in six innings. CMS is now 27-11 overall and 19-7 in SCIAC play.

Game 1: CMS 5, Redlands 0
CMS got on the board in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Athenas loaded the bases with three-consecutive walks by Uphold, all with two outs. Freshman infielder Mikayla O'Neal had an infield hit just to the right of the shortstop which scored Palmer to give CMS its first run of the game.

In the top half of the second inning, sophomore pitcher Hayley Schultz (21-3) got the Athenas out of a bases loaded situation with two outs as she struck out Amanda Clark to end Redlands' threat in the inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs had their top of the order up and were threatening to score, this time with runners on first and third with two outs. Schultz got herself out of the jam again as she forced Vicki King to fly out to center field to end the inning.

The Athenas in the bottom half of the fifth had their top of the order up and cashed in. The Bulldogs' Uphold got the first two CMS hitters to ground out which left Palmer to start a two out rally. Uphold hit Palmer and freshman infielder Katie Savard. Sophomore Marie Bradvica then came to the plate and delivered with an RBI single into left center field that scored Palmer and gave the Athenas a 2-0 lead. The Athenas weren't done yet. On the very next pitch, O'Neal smoked a line drive through the left side of the infield that scored Savard while Bradvica scored on a throwing error by the left fielder.

CMS scored another run in the bottom of the sixth inning off the bat of freshman outfielder Shannon O'Neill. She hit the ball into left field over the head of the Bulldogs' third baseman. The left fielder mishandled the ball which scored freshman outfielder Janelle Shiozaki for an added run and a 5-0 lead.

The Athenas' Schultz retired the Redlands' hitters in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to finish the CMS win. She pitched a complete-game shutout as she allowed seven hits, one walk and struck out two.

O'Neal led the way for the Athenas with three out of their six hits for the game. She went 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles and two RBI.

Game 2: Redlands 9, CMS 0 (6 Innings)
Redlands jumped out in front early in the second game as they scored six runs on six in the first inning to take command.

The Bulldogs, with Upland (21-6) and her team's defense behind her, stymied the Athenas' bats in game two as she allowed just four hits in five innings of work with three strikeouts.

CMS had hits from junior infielder Megan Latta, O'Neill, Palmer and Shiozaki.  Redlands added another run in the second inning and two more in the top half of the sixth to make the score 9-0.

The Athenas finish regular season play with a doubleheader at Chapman University Saturday, April 20, for the opportunity to be the second seeded team in the SCIAC Tournament next week which begins on Friday, April 26 at Redlands.
