Athenas Sweep In SCIAC Opener

Athenas Sweep In SCIAC Opener

CMS Softball opened the 2012 SCIAC season with a sweep of Occidental College, 3-0 and 9-0.

Pitchers Rebecca Gularte and Hayley Schultz led the attack from the circle pitching a 4 hitter and 1 hitter respectively.  Both held the Tigers at bay not allowing a runner to reach third all afternoon.

Gularte notched 6 strike outs in 25 batters faced and fielded her position equally well accounting for three assists.  Hayley punched out three batters in 16 faced over five innings of work and capped the final frame leading a 1-6-3 double-play followed by her third strike out of the day.

In routine fashion, senior centerfielder Megan Morris made a web-gem, flying "superman" catch in centerfield robbing Oxy of a hit and senior catcher Rebecca King caught a runner stealing second putting her at a perfect 2 for 2 on the year throwing runners out.

Offensively, newcomer Megan Latta went 3 for 4 on the day driving in one and scoring twice.  Harmony Palmer's knack for the timely hit continued as she drove in 2 and scored twice on a 2 for 6 day.  Michaela Ecklund slapped her way to a stout 3 for 5 on the afternoon with one RBI and 2 runs scored.  Seniors Emily Lopez, 3 for 7 with 3 RBIs, and Rebecca King also swung hot bats, with the latter driving a ball deep to the fence for a bases clearing 3 RBI double to break open the second game of the twin bill.

The schedule picks up quickly for the Athenas as two of the next three weekends involve back-to-back double-headers against stiff competition.  Friday, February 17th, the squad heads to Chapman University for a double-header starting at 3 and finishing under the lights.  They head to SCIAC rival University of La Verne Saturday to play two starting at noon.
