CMS Men's Water Polo Defeats Pomona-Pitzer 12-7, Remains Perfect in SCIAC
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Gavin Rosser had two goals and three assists as the top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team earned a big 12-7 road win over No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday night at Haldeman Pool.
With the win, CMS improves to 17-6 overall and stays perfect in the SCIAC at 8-0, one game ahead of Redlands, who the Stags visit in the regular season finale. The win over Pomona-Pitzer bumps the Sagehens back to 5-2 in league play and gives the Stags a two-game lead with the tiebreaker, after winning the only Sixth Street rivalry game of the regular season.
CMS never trailed in the game, but needed to respond in the fourth quarter after Pomona-Pitzer closed to within 8-7. The Stags did just that, closing the game on a 4-0 run, capped by two straight goals from Rosser.
Luke (Bear) Weigle started the 4-0 run with a goal with 6:30 to play, and Len Korol made it 10-7 with 3:54 left. One possession later, Rosser found the net with 3:29 to go and the Stags were able to cruise down the stretch.
CMS led 7-4 at the half, after Hassen Hove closed out the scoring with 1:05 left. Auggie Aliaga answered a Sagehen goal in the third, but Pomona-Pitzer scored the last goal of the third and the first of the fourth to pull within 8-7, before the Stags closed out strong.
Aidan Nettekoven had 10 saves for CMS to get the win in goal, while Jeffrey Koretz, Korol and Weigle joined Rosser with two goals apiece.
CMS will be back in action in one week when it hosts Cal Lutheran for a 7 p.m. contest.
