Whittier takes regular season matchup 11-7

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team faced a potent Whittier College on Wednesday and recorded the 11-7 loss. The score was tied after one quarter but then the Poets poured in seven goals in the middle two periods to eventually take the match.

The last time CMS and Whittier faced each other was in the SCIAC Championship game on Nov. 22 that fell the Stags' way, 12-11 in overtime, to send CMS into the NCAA postseason.

Last night, the teams were deadlocked at 3-3 after the first eight minutes with goals by seniors Ellison Taylor (CMC) and Eric Bakar (CMC) and junior Noah Deer (CMC).

The second period saw Whittier earn a two-goal lead at 6-4 going into halftime. The Stags scored first after the break with a power play goal by Deer for his second of the game. The Poets then put together a four-goal streak, stretching their lead out to five before CMS put in another at the 1:30 mark in the third period.

The final quarter was a defensive battle. Each team only netted one goal as Whittier maintained the separation for the 11-7 victory.

Three Stags scored a pair of goals each in the game: Taylor, Deer and senior Alex Waggoner (CMC). Next up for CMS (9-12, 1-1 SCIAC) is its first home game in conference against Cal Lutheran (9-7, 1-1 SCIAC) on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 11 a.m.
