Joshua Martinez Breaks Own Hurdles Record, Sarath Kakani Moves into Third in Shot Put

REDLANDS, Calif. - Joshua Martinez ran a 14.43 to take seven hundredths of a second off his own CMS record in the 110-meter hurdles, while Sarath Kakani added over a foot to his PR in the shot put to move into third place all-time for the Stags at the Redlands Final Qualifier on Thursday.

Martinez broke the longest-standing record in CMS men's track and field in the 110-meter hurdles earlier this season when he ran a 14.50, surpassing the 14.59 that William Fulton ran in 1991. Martinez had come within one one-hundredth of a second last year with a 14.60, but was able to break it this season and trimmed another .07 off at Redlands.

Kakani, meanwhile, threw 16.59 meters in the shot put (54'5.25") surpassing his previous best of 16.13 meters (52'11") set earlier this year. He moves into third place in CMS history, behind Taylor Berliant (55'11") and Grant Heffernan (54'11.25"), both of whom achieved their marks in 2011.

Kakani's throw also moves him into 18th place nationally this season, up from 23rd, which puts him above the cutline to qualify for nationals. He achieved his throw on the last of his six attempts at the meet, a full meter further than any of his previous five attempts.

Kaden Cassidy also set a PR in the hammer throw with a 179'1" adding one foot, two inches to a mark that places 10th in CMS history. Colin Scanlon moved into the top 10 (ninth) in the 400 meters with a 48.33, after breaking the program's 400-meter hurdles record earlier this year.

CMS will next await the official invitations from the NCAA, with Hayden Beauchemin (steeplechase), Ellis DelVecchio (800 meters), Mason Ratkovich (1500 meters), joining Scanlon and Kakani above the cutline, with several others waiting on potential invitations as well if the people above them choose not to compete in those events.
