Christian Campbell Finishes Fourth at Indoor Nationals in 200 Meters, Takes All-America Honors
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Christian Campbell took another nine-hundredths of a second off his PR with a 21.33 to finish fourth in the 200 meters at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Campbell came into the NCAA Championships as the 12th seed with a personal best of 21.52, but had the fourth-best time in Friday's prelims with a 21.42, easily qualifying for the finals on Saturday (top eight).
As one of only eight competitors who made it through to the finals, Campbell merely had to finish his race on Saturday without a disqualification to earn All-America honors. He accomplished that, and then some, running almost another tenth of a second faster in the final with his 21.33, while coming in second in his heat to Eric Gregory of Gallaudet (21.16).
Campbell was in the first heat, and the winner, Cheickna Traore of Ramapo, followed in the second heat by setting an all-time Division III record of 20.72.
Finishing fourth was an impressive showing for Campbell, who was competing against a loaded field that included the three fastest 200 runners in Division III history during outdoor season. He also finished just ahead of the national champion JP Vaught of Centre, who won both the indoor and outdoor 200 meter championships last year.
Campbell will next turn his attention to outdoor season, beginning with the Redlands Invitational next weekend, followed by the second SCIAC Multi-Dual at Occidental.
