Campbell Breaks 35-Year-Old CMS Record in First 100-Meter Race of 2023

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Christian Campbell finished in first place in the 100 meters with a 10.47 to break a program record that had held since 1988 to highlight the performance of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers Meet on Saturday.

Campbell was running the 100 for the first time this year, after competing in the 60 and 200 indoor distances in his first meets. His performance edged the record of 10.52, which had held since Mark Messana ran it in 1988. Nick Teresi and Quincey Williams also came in under 11 seconds with times of 10.87 and 10.88, respectively. 

Joshua Martinez was also an individual champion for the Stags in the 110-meter hurdles, coming in under 15 seconds with a 14.93. Martinez finished off a 4x100 relay that included Williams, Campbell and Teresi in 41.19, which is just .04 off the CMS record set last year. 

Sarath Kakani and Jason Bowman went 1-2 in the shot put, while Bowman won the hammer, and Ian Osborne, Bowman and Vinny Kakani were 1-2-3 in the discus. Truman Knowles, an All-American in the javelin last year, came in second to Logan Peyton of Division III Azusa Pacific. 

Miles Christensen was the top collegiate finisher in the mile with a time of 4:11.04, behind only unattached runner Joshua Schuld. The 4x400 relay team of Hayden Beauchemin, Matthew Jabro, Daniel Krasseman and Kai Dettman finished first in 3:26.72

Ellis DelVecchio came in second place in the 800 meters, while Colin Scanlon was third in the 400 hurdles, Kumi Selva was third in the triple jump, Jackson Aldrich was fourth in the 400 and Oliver Pick was sixth in the 3000. 

CMS will be back in action next week when it hosts the Rossi Relays on Saturday at 10 a.m.
