CMS Men's Track and Field Sends Four to NCAA Indoor Championships

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team will send four representatives to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, North Carolina this week, the NCAA announced Sunday evening.

Kai Dettman will be the highest seed of the quartet, as he put up the second-best time in Division III during indoor track and field season in the 800 meters, earning a 1:51.69 at the Boston University Last Chance Meet on Feb. 27. Massimo Bertini attended the same meet and ended up with the 19th best time in the 400 meters with a 49.34 (he'll be the 17th seed at nationals, as two runners in front of him will not compete in the 400).

Henry Pick and Miles Christensen both earned their way into the 3000 meter race, also at Boston University, although they earned top-20 times at the BU Season Opener on December 4. Both were just coming off the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in November, where Pick earned All-America honors by finishing third, and two weeks later, put up fast times at Boston University which held up as two of the top 20 in the country over the course of the indoor season.

Christensen will be making his second NCAA Track and Field appearance, after earning a bid to the outdoor championships in 2019, following his first-place finish in the 5000 meters at the SCIAC Championships. He has also made three NCAA Cross Country appearances, including this fall, helping CMS to a pair of top-10 finishes. Pick will get his first chance to compete at track and field nationals, after his All-America performance in cross country this fall, due to the pandemic costing him a chance at qualifying as either a first-year or sophomore. Dettman and Bertini will also be making their first appearances.

The four Stags will be joined by three members of the Athenas who also qualified. Meredith Bloss and Emily Clarke were part of the women's cross country team that finished second at nationals in the fall, with both earning All-America honors. Brooke Simon also qualified in the pole vault for the Athenas.
