Maxwell Knowles Earns SCIAC Field Athlete of the Week Honor

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Graduate student Maxwell Knowles captured the SCIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor for events through Sunday, Feb. 27, the league office announced on Monday.

Knowles made a big step forward as he looks to defend his SCIAC javelin title from 2019, when he threw 199 feet when CMS hosted the league championships. At the CMS Rossi Relays this weekend, he placed second with a throw of 186'3", behind only a thrower from Division II Azusa Pacific.

Knowles added 19 feet to his first competition of the year, when he had a throw of 167'3" at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers last weekend. He last left off his collegiate competition in 2020 by earning the SCIAC Field Athlete of the Week honor in February, just before COVID shut down the season. He returned to campus this spring for his final season and remains one of the favorites to win the SCIAC title again.

It marks the second straight week that CMS has had one of the award winners. A week ago, Massimo Bertini captured it for his performance in winning the 200 and the 400 at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers. Bertini and Kai Dettman were in action this weekend at the Boston University Last Chance Indoor Track meet, where Dettman recorded the second-fastest 800 time in the country and might have given the Stags a sweep this week, but the SCIAC awards are only open to outdoor track and field results.

CMS will be back in action this weekend at the first SCIAC multi-dual, hosted by La Verne.
