Jamie Cockburn Earns SCIAC Track Athlete of the Week Award

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Jamie Cockburn was selected as the SCIAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week for events through Sunday, March 8, the league office announced today.

Cockburn earned the award after leading the defending SCIAC champion Stags to a dominant win in their first league multi-dual of the season at Whittier (along with Occidental, Caltech and Chapman). He captured the 400 meters in 48.85 seconds, winning by a comfortable margin of .4 seconds over Donovan Wilson of Chapman. He also anchored the 4x400 relay to a win in the final event of the day, pulling away at the end to defeat Whittier's team by over a half-second (3:19.86 to 3:20.59).

In addition to his first-place finishes, Cockburn was also second in the 200 meters in 22 seconds flat, just .17 out of first place. He was also part of a 4x100 relay team that came in second. A year ago, he was part of a CMS 4x100 that set a program record and qualified for nationals, and part of a 4x400 team that won a SCIAC title.

As a team, CMS finished first (or tied for first) in 14 of the 19 events at the five-team SCIAC Multi-Dual, maintaining its status as the team to beat in the league.

The Stags will be back in action this weekend when they travel to participate in the annual Occidental Carnival on Saturday evening.
