CMS Men's Track and Field Splits at First SCIAC Multi-Dual

REDLANDS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team defeated La Verne handliy (120-41), but was edged by Redlands by just seven points (85-78) in the first SCIAC multi-dual of the 2019 spring season on Saturday afternoon.

The throwers had a big day for the Stags as junior Reese Peterson won both the discus and the hammer throws, while sophomore Jordan Venglass took first in the javelin. Four schools competed at the event, including Cal Lutheran, which the Stags did not have a scoring dual against for the conference standings. 

Freshman Jamie Cockburn earned a win for CMS in the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.83, the only runner of the 14 in the field to come in under 50 seconds. The Stags also finished 1-2-3 in the 5000, with junior Thomas D'Anieri winning in 15:07.36, followed by sophomore Stevie Steinberg and freshman Kyril Van Schendel. 

Junior Walker Quinn came in first in the pole vault with a top clearance of 13'5.25", while freshman Garegin Soghomonyan also cleared 13'5.25" but came in second due to needing more attempts at the lower heights to advance. Junior Tse Yang Lim took first in the triple jump by two feet with a top effort of 42'5.5" on his third of four attempts. 

The dual win with Redlands was perhaps even closer than the seven-point final margin might indicate. The spread essentially came down to the performance of Redlands middle-distance runner Tucker Cargile, who won two races by less than a half-second combined to swing the team score. In the 800, he edged out Keizo Morgan in the final lunge to the finish by just three-hundredths of a second (1:58.68 to 1:58.71). He then edged CMS freshman Miles Christensen by just .38 in the 1500 (3:56.40 to 3:56.78). 

CMS will next be in action when it head to the Oxy Distance and Sprint Carnival next weekend.
