Men's Track and Field Opens Campaign at Westmont Indoor Meet

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team opened up its 2019 campaign on Saturday, with a majority of the team heading to Santa Barbara to participate in Westmont College's season-opening On Your Marks meet.

Among the highlights was Alex McDonald, who finished second in the 400 meters with a time of 50.73, behind only Octavio Moreno of Santa Ana (50.45). Jamie Cockburn finished fourth for the Stags in the 400 and came in fourth in the 200 meters (first among Division III competitors) with a 22.88.

The 4x400 relay also finished in third with McDonald and Cockburn running the first two legs, followed by Matthew Guillory in the third and Keizo Morgan handling the anchor leg. 

Christopher LaRovere qualified for the finals (top eight out of 33) in the 60 meters and finished seventh with a time of 7.25 seconds. Guillory and Jacob Adolphe just missed qualifying as well by one-hundredth of a second, tying for ninth with a time of 7.30 in the prelims. Dylan McGarvey cracked the top 10 in the 60-meter hurdles with a 9.49, finishing ninth. 

Tse Yang Lim earned a third-place finish in the triple jump with a top effort of 12.07 meters, while Garegin Soghomonyan was tied for third in the pole vault at 4.45 meters. 

In the throwing events, Reese Peterson was sixth in the weight throw with a 12.82 meters and seventh in the shot put with a 13.36. Matthew Sill finished eighth in the weight throw at 11.91 meters, while Andrew Maltz was tenth in the shot put at 12.10 meters.

CMS will next be in action when several athletes will travel to the Husky Classic at the University of Washington on Feb. 8-10 for another indoor meet.
