CMS Men's Tennis Earns 13th Straight Nationals Trip with 5-1 Win over Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team, ranked No. 1 in the country, defended its home court with a 5-1 win over No, 19 Redlands to advance through to the NCAA Quarterfinals in St. Louis on March 21, its 13th straight appearance at nationals.

With the win, CMS improves to 27-3 on the season and stretches its winning streak to 23, since falling to Emory and Case Western at the ITA Indoor Championships in February. The Stags have won their regional every year since falling to UC Santa Cruz in the 2009 regional finals, minus a two-year break in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Matthew Robinson provided the first point for the Stags, teaming with Ian Freer for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, and then provided the clinch with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.

Advik Mareedu also had a singles-doubles sweep, taking an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles with Josh Kim, and then earning a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Mareedu, who came into the match ranked No. 2 in the nation in singles, picked up his 15th win a row as he improves to 28-4 on the season (22-2 in duals).

Anirudh Gupta earned the fourth point for CMS with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, improving his record to 25-5 on the season, while Robinson was able to win a close race to the clinch with his win at No. 3. Tarm Rojanasoonthon was up 6-2, 5-3 at No. 5 singles (and 30-0 in his final game), and Warren Pham led 6-4, 4-2 at No. 6. Freer was also up 6-4, 3-4 at No. 2 singles.

CMS reached the NCAA Semifinals last year, where it dropped a close 5-4 decision to Tufts. The same two teams could meet again in the quarterfinals, which would make the third straight year that they've played at nationals, if the Jumbos can win their regional tomorrow.
