Top-Ranked Stags Tennis Hosts NCAA Regional on Friday and Saturday
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team, which captured the SCIAC's automatic bid for the 17th straight season by winning the league's postseason tournament, will serve as one of eight hosts for the NCAA Division III Regionals this Friday and Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, the NCAA announced this morning during its selection show.
CMS will host UC Santa Cruz in one of the two regional semifinals on Friday, while Redlands and George Fox will meet in the other semifinal. The two winners will advance to the regional championship on Saturday, for the right to advance to the NCAA Division III Championships May 21-24 at Washington University in St. Louis.
CMS comes into the NCAA Division III Championships with a 21-match winning streak and a 25-3 overall record. The Stags have not fallen since dropping matches to Emory and Case Western at the ITA Indoor Championships on Feb. 24-25. The only loss that CMS has suffered outdoors all season came on opening day to Division II Point Loma on Feb. 16.
The Stags have not met UC Santa Cruz this season, but have faced Redlands twice at Biszantz, taking a 6-3 win during the regular season and then defeating the Bulldogs 5-0 in the SCIAC Championship match on Friday. CMS also met George Fox on March 15 in the first round of the Stag-Hen Invitational, winning 7-0.
The winner of the CMS regional will advance to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals, where it will meet the winner of a regional that features Tufts, Swarthmore, Christopher Newport, N.C. Wesleyan and Houghton. Should Tufts and CMS both advance, it would mark the third straight season that the two teams have played at nationals, with the Jumbos earning a hard-fought 5-4 win a year ago.
CMS has won its NCAA Regional for 12 straight seasons, dating back to 2010, following a loss to UC Santa Cruz in the 2009 regional final. The Stags won the national title in 2015, and have finished as the national runner-up four times in that span, most recently in 2019, when it fell to Emory.
CMS will face UC Santa Cruz on Friday at 10:00 AM, followed by George Fox versus Redlands at 2:00 PM. Winners will advance to the Regional Final on Saturday at 10:00 AM. To view the full NCAA Division III Men's Tennis bracket, go to the following link:
