Top-Ranked CMS Men's Tennis Wins 18th Straight, Knocks Off Caltech 7-2

PASADENA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team, ranked No. 1 in the country, improved its winning streak to 18 straight matches with a 7-2 road win over Caltech on Friday afternoon.

CMS improves to 22-3 overall on the season, and has not lost since it fell to defending national champion Case Western at the ITA Indoor Championships in February. The Stags have only one outdoor defeat this season, which came in the season opener to Division II Point Loma. Caltech, which is ranked No. 31 in the nation, slips to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in the SCIAC with the loss.

The outcome was never in doubt, as CMS swept the three doubles lines, and then picked up two quick singles wins for the clinch, with Warren Pham winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6, and Advik Mareedu following with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1. Mareedu is now 26-4 in singles play at No. 1, and is 6-0 in conference play, and 15-0 in the West Region.

Mareedu's win came moments before Anirudh Gupta captured his 19th singles win of the seaon, a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 5. Matthew Robinson at No. 3 needed to break serve at 5-4 down in the first set, but then won 10 of the next 11 games for a 7-5, 6-1 win, which put the Stags up 7-0. The Beavers picked up the final two points for a 7-2 final.

Anirudh Reddy and Tarm Rojanasoonthon earned the first doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 3, their fourth straight win, before Robinson and Ian Freer, ranked No. 22 in the nation, picked up an 8-3 win over Daniel Wen and Kyle McCandless, who are ranked No. 20. Mareedu and Josh Kim finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win at No. 2.

CMS will close out the regular season tomorrow with a Sixth Street rivalry match at home at 6 p.m. against No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer, which is also 6-0 in league play, in a battle for the regular season SCIAC title.
