Top-Ranked CMS Men's Tennis Shuts Out Whittier
WHITTIER, Calif. - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned its 15th win in a row with a 9-0 win at Whittier on Friday afternoon. Freshman Josh Kim earned wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 6 singles to lead the Stags.
With the win, CMS now stands at 19-3 on the year and 4-0 in the SCIAC, extending its winning streak in league matches to 149 (157 including the SCIAC Postseason Tournament), dating back to 2005.
Kim and Advik Mareedu started off the shutout with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles for the first point, which was followed by an 8-2 win by Ian Freer and Matthew Robinson at No. 1 doubles. Warren Pham and Anirudh Reddy paired for the first time this season and finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win at No. 3.
Freer earned the first singles victory due to retirement after winning the first set 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Anirudh Gupta earned the clinch with his twentieth singles win of the year, a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles.
The Stags then closed out with four more straight set wins, as Pham won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5, Robinson prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, Kim earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6, and Mareedu capped off the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow for a pair of home matches at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, taking on No. 32 Chapman at 10 a.m. and No. 22 Westcliff of NAIA at 4 p.m.
