Top-Ranked Stags Tennis Shuts Out Skidmore to Stretch Win Streak to 12
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The No. 1-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team completed a 3-0 road trip to St. Louis with a 7-0 win over Skidmore on Saturday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center, stretching its winning streak to 12 matches.
With the win, CMS now stands at 16-3 on the season, after defeating No. 7 WashU on their home courts, and No. 9 Trinity at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center yesterday by identical 5-2 scores. The Stags dropped matches to Emory and Case Western at the ITA Indoor Championships, but have not lost outdoors since, and are 15-1 outdoors this season, with the only loss coming in the season opener to Division II Point Loma.
CMS took the doubles point quickly, with Ian Freer and Matthew Robinson earning a 6-1 win at No. 1, followed by a 6-3 win at No. 2 from Advik Mareedu and Anirudh Reddy. Warren Pham and Tarm Rojanasoonthon made it a doubles sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
The Stags earned the clinch with three lopsided wins at the top three singles positions, as Mareedu won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, Freer took a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2, and Robinson added a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 to give CMS a 4-0 lead. Rojanasoonthon added a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5, and Anirudh Gupta came back for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 win at No. 4.
Pham capped off the match with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 6 to give CMS the 7-0 shutout. It was the first shutout in the winning streak for CMS since a win over Colorado College on March 16, as the Stags survived a gauntlet of tough wins over No. 10 Tufts (5-2), No. 6 Middlebury (4-3), No. 8 Williams (4-3), No. 7 WashU (5-2) and No. 9 Trinity (5-2). The Stags also defeated No. 3 Bowdoin 4-3 on the same day as the Colorado College win, giving it wins over six other top 10 teams in the span of two weeks.
CMS is back in action when it returns to SCIAC play with a road match at Occidental on Saturday at 3 p.m., and will next be at home to take on Cal Lutheran on Friday, April 12 at 6 p.m.
