CMS Men's Tennis Bounced in the National Team Indoors Semis by No. 6 Emory

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. - In an ITA National Team Indoors semifinal matchup between the No. 5 and No. 6 ranked teams in the country, Emory came from behind in five matches to blank the Stags 7-0. CMS will now face defending NCAA Champions and top ranked Case Western in the third place match on Sunday.

CMS responded from a lackluster doubles outing on Friday against Trinity University with more energy across all three doubles positions against the Eagles. Joshua Kim and Tarm Rojanasoonthon gave the Stags an early spark at No. 3 doubles with a 6-4 win in a match in which they never trailed. At No. 2 doubles, Advik Mareedu and Warren Pham traded service breaks early, but then led 4-5 before dropping the final three games of the set. At No. 1 doubles, Ian Freer and Matthew Robinson mounted a spirited comeback from 1-4 down, but were eventually broken at 4-5 to give Emory the doubles point.

Trailing 1-0 after the doubles, CMS came out strong in four of the six singles positions. Rojanasoonthon raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first set at No. 6, while Mareedu won the first set at No. 1. Freer earned an emphatic break at 4-all to serve for his first set at No. 2, right as Robinson earned his first service break to win the opening set at No. 3. Emory then began a comeback that would ultimately impact every singles match. With CMS dropping a straight set loss at No. 5 to fall behind 2-0, Mareedu's seemingly insurmountable 6-3, 4-0 lead at No. 1 was erased as the top position headed to a decisive third set. Rojanasoonthon's lead at No. 6 similarly evaporated in a 7-5, 6-0 loss that gave Emory a 3-0 advantage. As Freer and Robinson fought to maintain advantage at No. 2 and No. 3, Emory clinched at No. 4 with a straight set win. As the dual match concluded, CMS had relinquished leads in five of the nine matches in an otherwise close semifinal loss.
