SCIAC Selects Philip Martin as Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Philip Martin earned the SCIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honor for events through Sunday, March 27, the league office announced today.

Martin was not in the lineup on Friday as the Stags suffered a 5-4 defeat to Middlebury, but returned on Saturday for a perfect 4-0 day, winning two matches at the No. 1 line in both singles and doubles, as CMS defeated No. 6 Williams and No. 16 George Fox.

In the Williams win, Martin bounced back from a first-set loss to defeat Chase Cohen, the No. 2 ranked player in the country, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. He added a 6-1, 6-3 against George Fox to complete his 4-0 day after all winning 8-5 at No. 1 doubles with Nathan Arimilli (the duo also won at No. 1 vs. Williams 8-4).

The Stags have now won the SCIAC award four times this season, including twice from Robert Liu. Matthew Robinson also won it after going 6-0 at the ITA Indoor Nationals. 

CMS will be back in action when it returns to SCIAC competition this weekend, taking on Caltech at home on Friday at 3 p.m., and then traveling to Cal Lutheran and Westmont on Saturday.
